Assessment Stages

PHD central

STAGE 1

Assessments year one (or part-time year 1-2)

1. Final Admissions Proposal (maximum 2000 words)

The proposal is submitted as a PDF attached to an agreement signed by the student, advisors and Chair of Admissions (included in the registration and posted on the TT Research Journal blog).

2. Courses (required) Three terms

Assessment is based on participation in discussions, exercises, projects, and end-of-term essays.

3. Confirmation of Route (2,000 - 10,000 words)

The culmination of year one (or year two, part-time)
Determination: MPhil award or PhD-track

A qualifying review consists of submission of the Confirmation of Route form and an oral presentation with follow-up Q&A. The Independent Chair of Dissertation will engage two reviewers to attend the student's residency presentation and forward their feedback and suggestions to the Team within the week.

The report will summarize the research's aims and key objectives or questions, explain how the project contributes to (or challenges) existing work in the field (i.e., its originality or significance), and provide a brief outline of the proposed plan of work (research proposal).

STAGE 2

Assessments year two (or part-time year 3-4)

4. Courses (required)

Assessment is based on participation in discussions, exercises, projects, and end-of-term essays.


5. Full Draft

The culmination of year two (or part-time, year 4)
Determination: Progression to completion.

A full first draft of your dissertation will be reviewed by your advisory team to assess if everything essential has been covered, the structure is solid, dissemination considered and the project can be completed in one year (or part- time, two years).

STAGE 3

Assessments year three (or part-time year 5-6)

6. Dissertation

A range between 75 and 150 pages is expected to cover the scope of the inquiry in sufficient depth and address all relevant aspects proposed and approved at the Confirmation of Route stage, inclusive of all additions and changes agreed upon with Advisors subsequently. Appendices and required dissertation title pages are additional.

7. Viva Voce

The viva voce is the penultimate milestone for completing the Doctor of Philosophy degree requirements. Submitting the Dissertation for publication is the final step.


8. Publication

The dissertation is submitted to the TT Dissertation Archive and the institute’s portal in the institute’s SAR Research Catalogue online portal.
